Resonators
Traditional resonators on African instruments were usually gourds. However, these are fragile and difficult to work with. As with most modern Zimbabwean marimbas, we use modern materials for practicality.
The materials for resonators are chosen for their light weight and durability. ABS plastic is used for tenors and sopranos. Five inch aluminum is used for baritones, and six inch styrene (white plastic) is used for basses. The resonators have a membrane covered hole mounted on the end plug that creates a characteristic "buzzing" quality. The resonators are tuned with an electronic feedback system to insure maximum punch and volume.
We are currently experimenting with box shaped Helmholtz resonators for short basses. Like western orchestral marimbas, Helmholtz resonators allow one to have short resonators for bass notes. The other option for those who wish a short bass frame is j-shaped resonators made of styrene. A short bass frame is 34 inches high, whereas a tall bass frame with straight resonators is 54 inches high. Tall bass frames marimbas come with an adjustable stand.
